Inspiring Communities to Build Peaceful, United, Prosperous Societies
Mon-Sat: 08:00 - 17:00

Agency for Humanitarian Assistance and Development-AHD-is a national NGO that inspires and empowers communities to build peaceful, united, and prosperous societies - societies where people enjoy a high quality of life. Founded in January 2015, the organization is incorporated with the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) of the Republic of South Sudan with registration number 419. The organization was formerly called Organizing People for Prosperity (OPP). But this name was changed in September 2019 because there is a group of South Sudanese politicians, named “Other Political Parties (OPP),” in the IGAD-mediated revitalized peace agreement of 2018. So, the change of name was to avoid this confusion.

The organization is regarded by the communities we serve as a reliable mentor of youth in transformational leadership, an inspirer of community progress, and an emancipator of women. Our peacebuilding strategy is mainly supported by PAX, a Dutch peace movement. Through PAX’s support, AHD trains, mentors, and assists more than eight community-based youth groups in Juba and Mangalla, morally and technically, to implement youth-initiated and youth-led peace and reconciliation initiatives. With these youth, we have conducted more than 27 peace and trauma events in Juba’s multi-ethnic communities, resulting into changed perceptions of conflict resolution, tribes, youth inclusion in peace building, and an increased participation of young girls and women in public events in Juba communities: our events attracted more than 4000 participants. Our approach of youth inclusion in peace building is regarded as unique by the youths in Juba and Mangalla; currently, we manage youth seed grants for peace building initiatives, and have inspired, at the national level, young people, to participate in South Sudan’s permanent constitution making process. We are also an active member of the South Sudan NGO Forum and of the South Sudan Youth Partners Forum coordinated by the Ministry of Youths and Sports with support from UNFPA and UNDP.

We  offer mentorship and coaching to over 40 youth organization at the grassroots

Organizational Development Objectives

Resource mobilization

We want to diversify and create a stable funding base for operational sustainability by:

  • Developing key competencies in resource mobilization;
  • Strengthening networking capacities and build more networks;
  • Exploring opportunities for unrestricted grants;
  • Seeking and developing strategic partnerships with donors and foundations; and
  • Strengthening relationship with current funders or foundations (UNDP, PAX and Misereor).

Institutional and human resource capacity development

We are seeking support for our institutional and human resource capacity development to:

  • Enhance programme and administrative staff capacities in leadership and management;
  • Foster institutional effectiveness in monitoring, evaluation and impact analysis;
  • Mobilize adequate non-human resources and facilities for organizational efficiency and sustainability;
  • Mobilize additional competent staff and volunteers;
  • Strengthen staff welfare, motivation and retention schemes;
  • Develop staff competencies in critical, technical areas of work; and
  • Strengthen corporate governance.

The objectives of the organization are, to:

(a) Promote unity in diversity;

(b) Foster peaceful, democratic communities; and

(c) Contribute to building literate, educated, self-reliant, and prosperous communities.

South Sudan, the world’s newest state, emerged from several decades of armed liberation civil wars, and is still grappling with internal armed conflicts which have impoverished people, deprived them of quality formal education and production, and triggered ethnic communities to hate each other.

Moreover, available census data of 2008 reveal that South Sudan has 8.26 million people (now estimated to be 12 million people), of which

  • more than half (51%) of the population is below the age of eighteen,
  • 72% of the population is below the age of thirty
  • 83% of the population is rural,
  • 27% of the adult population is literate,
  • 55% of the population has access to improved sources of drinking water,
  • 78% of the households depend on subsistence crop farming or animal husbandry as their primary source of livelihood
  • 51% of the population lives below the poverty line, i.e. they earn less than 1 US dollar per day (South Sudan National Bureau for Statistics 2008 and 2010).

With this scenario in mind, therefore, the people of South Sudan should get organized and thrive to restore a lasting peace so they can settle, engage in production and be healthy, educated, and prosperous.

Hence, it is against this background that the organization was named ‘Organizing People for Prosperity’, founded to inspire communities to thrive for a prosperous-democratic society where people are responsible stewards and united to promote peace and a high quality of life through equipping them with skills for peaceful-coexistence, resilience, and hard work.
